BERKELEY – Senior defensive tackle Deandre Coleman has been named to the 2013 Outland Trophy Watch List announced Wednesday by the Football Writers Association of America. The honor is awarded annually to the best interior lineman in college football.
The recognition is the latest for Coleman during the 2013 preseason. Coleman is also a preseason second-team All-Pac-12 choice of Athlon, College Sports Madness and Phil Steele), while being selected as a third-team preseason All-Pac-12 pick by Lindy’s. He is also a candidate for the Rotary Lombardi Award given annually to the country’s top lineman on either side of the ball or linebacker as well as the Bronko Nagurski Trophy and Chuck Bednarik Award awarded to the nation’s top defensive player.
Coleman has been projected to be drafted as high as No. 33 overall in 2014 NFL Draft by NFLDraftScout.com and Lindy’s, while Steele has him as the nation’s No. 9 draft eligible defensive tackle. Lindy’s gave him special recognition as being a “Cal Player to Watch” in its preseason college football magazine, while Athlon called him a “Key Bear” in their publication prior to the season.
Coleman played in all 12 games in 2012, recording a team-high-tying 8.5 tackles for loss (-32 yards) and 3.0 sacks (-20 yards) to rank third on the club, while registering 48 tackles to lead all defensive linemen. He also added a fumble recovery, a pass breakup and two quarterback hurries. Coleman is Cal’s active career leader in tackles for loss (17.5), tackle for loss yards (-62 yards) and sack yards (-35 yards), while sharing the career lead among active players in sacks (5.0) and ranking tied for second in tackles (85). He has played in all 37 games possible with 13 starts over the past three seasons.
Cal will host seven games at Memorial Stadium in 2013 beginning with a three-game homestand to open the season against non-conference opponents Northwestern (Aug. 31, 7:30 p.m. PT, ESPN2), Portland State (Sept. 7, 2 p.m. PT, Pac-12 Networks) and Ohio State (Sept. 14, 4 p.m. PT, FOX). The Golden Bears will also play home Pac-12 games against Washington State on Homecoming Weekend (Oct. 5), Oregon State (Oct. 19), Arizona (Nov. 2) and USC (Nov. 9), with start times and television coverage to be announced at later dates for those four contests.
Cal’s road games in 2013 are at Oregon (Sept. 28), UCLA (Oct. 12), Washington (Oct. 26), Colorado (Nov. 16) and Stanford (Nov. 23). The Oregon contest will be televised by Pac-12 Networks while all other television coverage and all kick times will be announced at later dates.
