BERKELEY - The 2013 Cal Rugby Summer Camp, one of the oldest and arguably the most prestigious in the country, is shaping up to be another sold-out hit sponsored by World Rugby Shop and Gatorade on campus July 29-August 1 at the University of California.

Capped at just under 200 campers age 15-18, the Cal Rugby Summer Camp is a four-day immersion in the sport in which the Golden Bears have earned over 130 All-America honors and made 594 appearances with the U.S. National Team.

"Our aim," said head coach Jack Clark, "is to provide the campers with an enjoyable experience which improves their rugby and broadens their horizons within college rugby."

Today's campers are also excited about the return of rugby to the Summer Olympic Games in 2016, a three-year window in which teenagers can reasonably aspire to represent their country on the same stage on which Golden Bear rugby players helped the USA win gold medals at the 1920 and '24 Olympics. At the 2016 Summer Games in Rio, rugby will be played in the same 7s format in which the Rugby Bears won the 2013 Collegiate Rugby Championship on national television.

Campers at the 2013 Cal Rugby Summer Camp will train and take coaching instruction on Witter Rugby Field, nestled in Strawberry Canyon above San Francisco Bay, by Clark, fellow coach Tom Billups and Director of Operations Jerry Figone. They will be joined by special guest instructors who represent a wide spectrum of specialties on and off the field, including Dr. Phil Wagner, Director of Applied Research at SPARTA Performance Science; Nick McNeil, an Academic Advisor at the University; and Pete Smith of the Northern California Referee Society.

The campers' well being is administered to by athletic training staff from Intercollegiate Athletics with laundry services tended to by IA Equipment Services. Camper hydration needs are assigned to Gatorade. World Rugby Shop will outfit every camper in their high-performance Legacy SS Rugby Jerseys.

In addition to daily training sessions and an introduction to the training zone at the Simpson Center for Student-Athlete High Performance, campers are led through their days with seminars and clinics covering a wide range of on- and off-field topics, with current Cal players from a wide range of positions on the counselor staff. Evening video analysis allows players valuable feedback on their progress, and each evening ends with the resident campers checked in at an on-campus dormitory. The day-commuter campers rejoin the camp just after breakfast and the whole came enjoys lunch together each day.
