DES MOINES, Iowa - Alysia Montano (800 meters) and David Torrence (1500 meters) both advanced in their respective races at the USA Senior Outdoor Track & Field Championships Thursday, while Torie Owers placed in both the women's shot put and hammer at the USA junior meet at Drake Stadium.

Montano, a four-time USA champion at 800 meters who placed fifth in the event at last summer's Olympic Games, posted the fastest qualifying time, crossing the line in 2:01.96 to advance to Friday's semifinals. Torrence earned the ninth and final spot in Saturday's men's 1500-meter final with his qualifying time of 3:41.70. He edged Patrick Casey by 0.003 of a second to advance.

Owers, who completed her freshman year at Cal this past spring, was eighth in the shot put with a best effort of 47-5.25, while she took 11th in the hammer with a mark of 166-8. In addition, Cody Bickham finished 13th in the men's discus with a PR throw of 166-0. His previous best was 165-9 from a meet in Salinas on April 12.

In addition, 2013 graduate Amanda Hunter placed 11th in the triple jump at the senior meet with a wind-aided 40-6.75 mark, and volunteer assistant coach Nkosinza Balumbu took ninth in the men's triple jump at 53-8.50.

The USA senior championships serve as the selection event for the Team USA roster for the IAAF World Championships set for Aug. 10-18 in Moscow, Russia. Top finishers in the junior meet will compete at the Pan Am Junior Championships Aug. 23-25 in Medellin, Columbia.
