INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The third-ranked California women's rowing team continued competition in the NCAA Championships Saturday at Eagle Creek Park in Indianapolis, Ind., with two of the three boats advancing to Sunday's grand finals. The varsity eight and junior varsity eight boats were the two that advanced.

"We had a good day in some tough conditions and tight racing," head coach Dave O'Neill said. "It was great to have both the eights move on to the A final, and it was really too bad that the four had their worst race of the year. They'll bounce back tomorrow and race their hearts out in the B final."

The varsity eight took third in its semifinal heat with Virginia topping second-place USC, 7:00.61-7:05.99. Cal clocked in at third at 7:09.36.

"The first eight had one of their better races of the year, and they really stepped up to the challenge," O'Neill said. "Getting into the A final is never easy, and that race tomorrow looks wide open."

In the junior varsity eight, the Golden Bears finished second with a time of 6:55.09 behind Brown's 6:54.56. Cal just barely edged third-place Princeton to the finish line (6:55.26).

"The second eight has been coming from behind all year and it was more of the same today," O'Neill said. "They really came on strong in the second half and got themselves into the A final. It was a great race and an important step towards tomorrow."

Unfortunately for the Bears, the varsity four did not finish in the top three of its race, therefore that boat will compete in Sunday's B final. Cal finished fourth in its semifinal heat with a time of 7:46.11

The national championships conclude with the grand finals on Sunday.
