URBANA, Ill. - Under a sunny, Midwest sky, the season ended for Zsofi Susanyi and California, as the sophomore lost to Clemson's Yana Koroleva, 7-5, 7-6(6), in the NCAA Women's Tennis Singles Championship round of 16 on Friday at the Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex/Atkins Tennis Center.

The fifth-ranked and fifth-seeded Golden Bear had won five consecutive matches before her run in with the Tigers' Koroleva, who is ranked 16th by the ITA and seeded 9-16 at NCAA singles.

"It was a well-fought match, with some long points," Cal head coach Amanda Augustus said. "I'm really proud of Zsofi; this was probably the best she's played this spring. I feel like she's getting better and better. I felt like if she would've got that second set, she was probably better than Koroleva, but it was a great match. Koroleva's a good player. She played well. There were just a couple of points that were the difference in that match, and she hit a few winners when she needed to. But I'm really proud of Zsofi's efforts today and how hard she competed."

"It was pretty strange today," Susanyi said. "I think I played good tennis. It could've gone either way."

Susanyi ends her sophomore season as an All-American in singles. She is now a two-time All-American, including last year, when Susanyi reached the semifinals of the NCAA Singles Championship.

"Zsofi is still finishing in the season top 10 in the country," Augustus said. "And she knows she can do better, which is great, and that's why she fits in well on our team. She overcame the challenge of injuries. The good news is she has two more years at Cal. A lot of these experiences have helped her grow as a player and a person. She'll get the repetitions in that she didn't get this spring and continue her road to being 100 percent health-wise."

"I would describe it as up and down because of injuries," Susanyi said of her sophomore season. "But I worked very hard this season, and knowing I was injured and dealt with it, I was proud of how I did."
