BERKELEY - Former goaltender Lauren Hein was recognized multiple times at last week's Student-Athlete Academic Honors Luncheon at Haas Pavilion.
Hein, who graduated in Decmeber with a degree in Cell & Developmental Biology, was one of three recipients of the Oscar Geballe Postgraduate Scholarship, which recognizes devotion to Cal and the combination of scholarship and athletic competition. She also won the Neufeld Scholar Athlete Award for having the highest GPA of any graduating female student-athlete on campus (3.982). Furthermore, Hein received the Golden Bear Individual Award for having the best GPA on the women's soccer team.
"Every athlete at Cal deserves recognition," Cal coach Neil McGuire said. "But as far as the combination of academic standards and character, I don't think I've coached a finer athlete than Lauren. She's special."
Hein appeared in 12 matches during her Cal career and started eight. After originally deciding to skip her senior season to focus on academics, Hein decided to return to the team to help after backup goalie Kat Messinger suffered a season-ending knee injury during the preseason of 2012.
Hein has been accepted to the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, considered one of the top vet schools in the country. She will begin attending classes there this fall.
