BERKELEY - Former California Golden Bear women's golf team member Emily Childs (2009-12) qualified for the 2013 U.S. Open after finishing second overall at the Northern California Golfing Association Sectional, held at the Lake Merced Golf and Country Club in Daly City.
The top three players from the sectional earned spots in the field of the 2013 U.S. Women's Open which will take place June 24-30 at the Sebonack Golf Club in Southampton, N.Y. A one-time NGCA Women's Amateur Champion, the qualification marks Childs' first time qualifying for the U.S. Women's Open, one of five major championships on the LPGA Tour.
"It's been a goal I've worked for the entire year," Childs said. "In the beginning of the year I set up goals I want, and this is a big one. It is every golfer's dream to play in the U.S. Women's Open. I'm just very excited that I qualified."
Childs placed second at the Lake Merced sectional at even par (71-73=144). The one-day, 36-hole qualifier took place Monday, May 20 with Childs quickly playing at three-under through five holes before a pair of bogeys put her at one-under at the turn. Holding steady at one-under through 18 holes, Childs finished one-over in the second round to finish the qualifier at an even par 144.
"The last couple of holes were an adrenalin rush, and I was hitting everything far," Childs said. "On 18, I was nervous and knew I was close to making it. I ended up getting on the green in regulation on the par-five and had a two-putt to shoot even par on the hole (and move to one-under after the two rounds). I three-putted and missed a tiny putt on the last par, but it ended up being enough to make it, which was the most important thing."
Two current Cal golfers, freshman Hannah Suh and sophomore Morgan Thompson, also competed at the sectional. Suh finished fourth overall at +6 (150), three strokes shy of earning the final guaranteed qualifying spot, and will become the first alternate. Thompson tied for 19th at +14 (158).
Childs is the third Golden Bear to qualify for the U.S. Women's Open in the past four years. Current assistant coach Sofie Aagaard (Andersson) qualified for the tournament in 2010 at the Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, Penn., and Sophia Sheridan played in the 2009 tournament at Saucon Valley Country Club in Bethlehem, Penn.
