BERKELEY - In a back and forth game, Cal baseball (22-27, 10-16) yielded late home runs to No. 13 Arizona State (31-15-1, 13-10), falling 10-9 to the Sun Devils Saturday night (May 11) at Evans Diamond. After the Golden Bears had jumped out to a 9-6 lead after originally trailing ASU 6-0, the Sun Devils' Kasey Coffman hit a three-run homer in the eighth inning and James McDonald hit the game-winning homer with a lead-off homer in the ninth inning.

Cal out-hit ASU, 13-12, with freshman center fielder Devin Pearson going 3-for-4 with an RBI and Devon Rodriguez, Mitchell Kranson and Logan Scott (4-3), who gave up the home run in the ninth inning. The winning pitcher for the Sun Devils was reliever Ryan Burr (3-2, 1.2 innings, one hit, no runs, three strikeouts).

Cal had trailed 6-0 until coming back with six runs in the bottom of the third inning, bringing up 11 batters up to the plate. Key hits for the Bears in the third were an RBI double by junior catcher Andrew Knapp, RBI singles from Rodriguez, Kranson, Celsi and Pearson; and a sacrifice fly from freshman Nick Halamandaris.

Cal took a 9-6 lead by scoring three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning on an RBI single from sophomore shortstop Chris Paul and two run-scoring wild pitches by the Sun Devils. But, the Bears lost their lead when Coffman hit a three-run homer off of Keaton Siomkin in the eighth to tie the game, 9-9.

Cal junior right-hander Trevor Hildenberger, after giving up six runs in the first three innings (only two were earned), ended up throwing 6.0 innings with eight hits, one walk and six strikeouts.

The two teams will next play the rubber match of the series on Sunday, May 12 at 12 p.m. at Evans Diamond (shown on the Pac-12 Networks). The Bears had won game one of the series, 3-1, Friday night on Rodriguez's key two-run single in the eighth inning. All three games of the ASU-Cal series are broadcasted on KNEW 960 AM and KALX 90.7 FM as well.
