BERKELEY - Freshman third baseman Mitchell Kranson hit his first career home run and finished the evening 2-for-4, but Cal baseball dropped the second game of a three-game conference series versus Stanford, 9-4, Saturday night at Evans Diamond.
The Golden Bears (22-30, 10-19), who dropped Friday night's contest 9-8 to the Cardinal (28-21, 13-13), will play the third game of the series, Sunday, May 19 at 1 p.m. on Senior Day. Cal will honor graduating seniors Logan Scott, Trevor Hildenberger, Justin Jones, Ryan Wertenberger, Ryan Sandler and Seth Spivak.
Bear starter Hildenberger yielded three runs to Stanford in the first inning, but Cal was able to get two runs back in the second inning on an RBI single by junior right fielder Jacob Wark and a bases loaded walk by freshman left fielder Brian Celsi. However, that was as close as the Bears would get as the Cardinal scored nine runs on 12 hits off of four Cal pitchers.
The Bears scored a single run in the fifth inning on junior catcher Andrew Knapp's fielder's choice RBI and a run in the eighth inning on Kranson's lead off homer off of Stanford's winning pitcher, reliever Logan James (4.2 innings, four hits, one run, three walks, five strikeouts).
Following Cal's Sunday contest versus the Cardinal, the Bears close out their season Monday at 6 p.m. versus Gonzaga at Evans Diamond. The final game of the Stanford-Cal series is broadcasted on both KNEW 960 AM and KALX 90.7 FM, while Monday's Gonzaga game can be heard on KNEW 960 AM.
