BERKELEY - Right-handed pitcher/left-handed hitting shortstop Lucas Erceg, the 2013 Central Coast Section Player of the Year out of Westmont High School in Campbell, Calif., has signed a national letter of intent to play Cal baseball, it was announced today (June 12) by Golden Bear head coach David Esquer.

Erceg was outstanding this past spring, batting .437 with eight doubles, a triple, home run and 22 RBI. On the mound, he was 9-3 with a 0.59 ERA and had 106 strikeouts and only 19 walks in 83.2 innings.

Additional top statistics for Erceg in 2013 were a .523 on-base percentage and 25 runs scored offensively; and six complete games, three shutouts, a save and a .180 batting average against in 15 appearances on the mound.

"We are extremely excited to get a talented two-way player in Lucas Erceg," said Cal pitching coach Mike Neu. "Lucas has tremendous ability on the mound and can play multiple defensive positions, giving us several options on how to use him because of his versatility. Lucas is also a fierce competitor and has a passion for baseball, giving us another player from the 2013 class with outstanding intangible qualities."

Erceg joins the Bears' stellar class of eight other in-state athletes who had signed national letters of intent back on Nov. 15, 2012. The class, which will enter school in the fall of 2013, includes Andrew Buckley, a 6-2, 205-pound right-hander from Concord (De La Salle High School); Trevin Haseltine, a 6-3, 195-pound right-hander from Vacaville (Will C. Wood High School); Daulton Jefferies, a 5-11, 160-pound right-handed pitcher/infielder from Atwater (Buhach Colony High School, drafted 39th round by Miami); and Aaron Knapp, a 5-10, 160-pound left-handed hitting outfielder from Granite Bay (Granite Bay High School).

Also signing early national letters of intent with the Bears for 2013-14 were Alex Martinez, a 6-0, 160-pound right-hander from Union City (Logan High School); John Riley, a 6-0, 205-pound third baseman/catcher from San Jose (Willow Glen High School, drafted 31st round by San Francisco); Alex Schick, a 6-6, 175-pound right-handed pitcher from San Diego (Cathedral Catholic High School, drafted 17th round by Houston) and Robbie Tenerowicz, a 6-0, 175-pound middle infielder from Moraga (Campolindo High School, drafted 39th round by Washington).

"We are very excited about this 2013 class," said Cal baseball's recruiting coordinator Neu, who was the star closer on Miami's 1999 College World Series championship team. "Our staff really focused on players who are competitive, athletic, and have a desire to learn and get better. The players in this class will be primed to have success here at Cal, as well as at the next level. These guys give us a great blend of pitching and offensive weapons that will be the foundation of our program for years to come."

Mike Neu and hitting Tony Arnerich have done a great job putting this class together," added Esquer, the 2011 National Coach of the Year. "I couldn't be happier with the talent level and character of these kids. They fit in perfectly with our team culture and they all want to chase a national title."
