No. 2 Cal Races At Redwood Shores This Weekend

BERKELEY - California men's crew will head across the bay to Redwood Shores this Saturday and Sunday to compete in the Stanford Invitational.

The Golden Bears' varsity eight enters the weekend ranked second nationally in the latest USRowing Collegiate Poll released on Wednesday.

Cal is part of a strong field that includes other nationally-ranked crews Washington (No. 1), Stanford (No. 7), Wisconsin (No. 11) and Oregon State (No. 20), along with San Diego State, Saint Mary's, Santa Clara and UC Davis.

The Golden Bear varsity eight will race No. 11 Wisconsin at 9 a.m. on Saturday with the second varsity eight race against the Badgers slated for 9:40 a.m. The Bears' third varsity eight will race Santa Clara at 9:30 a.m. Cal and Wisconsin will compete in the freshman eight race at 10:10 a.m. A second freshman eight race against Orange Coast College is scheduled for 10:40 a.m. Cal's fourth varsity eight will meet Santa Clara at 3:20 p.m. on Saturday.

Sunday's racing includes the fourth varsity eight against Oregon State at 9:40 a.m., the second freshman eight at 10 a.m. and the Golden Bears' third varsity eight at 10:10 a.m.

The Bears are coming off season-opening victories in the San Diego Crew Classic on Mission Bay, April 6-7. Cal captured the Copley Cup for the fourth time in the last five years down in San Diego with the varsity eight defeating Stanford by more than 11 seconds with a time of 5:45.4 in the grand final.

Cal raced two boats in the second varsity eight grand final down in San Diego, taking the top two spots with times of 5:52.8 and 6:07, respectively, both ahead of third-place Oregon State by more than six seconds. The Golden Bear freshman eight also won its grand final with a time of 6:06.6, defeating second-place Stanford by more than 11 seconds.

Next weekend, Cal will head to Seattle to face top-ranked Washington in the 102nd annual battle for the Schoch Cup.
