Palmer Cup Coverage

WILMINGTON, Del. - Team USA closed out a 20.5-9.5 win Sunday over Europe at the Palmer Cup with Cal golfers Michael Kim, Joël Stalter and Michael Weaver playing at the event at the Wilmington Golf Club. Kim and Weaver played for Team USA, while Stalter was a member of Team Europe.

All three Cal golfers made contributions to their respective teams. Kim totaled 2.0 points, while Weaver contributed 1.5 points and Stalter earned a half point.

In singles play Sunday, Weaver was a 3 & 1 winner over Stalter in the first Palmer Cup match ever between college teammates. The match was all-square through 13 holes before Weaver birdied the 14th hole to take a one-hole lead and made birdies on the 16th and 17th holes to close out the match.

"It was fun out there today," Weaver said. "I had fun playing Joël and I think he did too, even though I got the best of him. It was pretty cool to be the first college teammates to ever play for each other in the Palmer Cup."

"Michael played just a little bit better although neither one of us were at our best," Stalter said. "I could not make a putt so it was hard to win, but he finished strong with two great shots so he deserved to win."

Weaver and his American partner James Erkenbeck were knocked off Sunday by Team Europe's Scott Fernandez and Ben Taylor, 4 & 3. On Saturday, Weaver picked up his other half-point when he and Kim played together and halved a four-ball match with Europe's Gary Hurley and Kevin Phelan.

Kim recorded a 1 up win in foursomes Sunday when he and Team USA partner Alex Carpenter defeated Stalter and Team Europe partner Julien Brun in a match they did not lead until the final putt. Kim, who was defeated 1 up by Pontus Widegren in a singles match Sunday, picked up his other half-point Saturday when he halved a singles match with Figueiredo.

Stalter earned his half-point Saturday by halving a singles match with Erkenbeck.

Each of Cal's three Palmer Cup representatives played on Cal's 2012-13 team that was the nation's No. 1 team in both the final Golfstat and Golfweek rankings released after the NCAA Championship despite a loss to Illinois in the match-play semifinals of the NCAA's. Cal won 12 of 14 stroke-play events during the campaign to set a modern-day NCAA record, including the 54-hole stroke-play portion of the NCAA Championship to enter match play as the top-seed, as well as the NCAA Pullman Regional and Pac-12 Championship team titles.

Peter Tomasulo is the only Cal golfer to have previously played in the Palmer Cup when he was a member of Team USA in 2003, while associate head coach Walter Chun was an assistant coach for Team USA in 2009.

After its 2013 victory, the United States leads the all-time Palmer Cup series 9-7-1. For more information visit
