The second varsity eight won by more than 10 seconds, recording a time of 5:47.6 to defeat Wisconsin (5:57.9).
"I have seen improvement in all three boats since San Diego," California head men's crew coach Mike Teti said. "We have been shifting the lineups a little bit in the top two boats and I think they both improved. We were pretty happy with the performance right now, but we have to get better for next week.
"With Wisconsin, they are always really well-coached kids," Teti added. "Chris Clark is a great coach and they are always pretty fit. It has always been really good races with them, but today was an easier time of it. They haven't had as much water time as us so we suspect they will be much better by the end of the year as they always are."
In Cal's third and final race of the morning, the freshman eight defeated Wisconsin with a time of 5:52.9, compared to the Badgers' 6:00.1.
"We had some illness with the freshmen and had to make a few substitutions," Teti said. "The guys did a great job to overcome that."
The Golden Bears competed in one race during the afternoon session with the fourth varsity eight defeating Santa Clara (6:13.8) by more than 10 seconds with a time of 6:03.5.
Sunday's racing in the Stanford Invitational includes the fourth varsity eight against Oregon State at 9:40 a.m., the second freshman eight at 10 a.m. and the Golden Bears' third varsity eight at 10:10 a.m. Following tomorrow's action, Cal will head to Seattle next weekend to face top-ranked Washington in the 102nd annual battle for the Schoch Cup.
