BERKELEY - The Cal baseball team (18-21), who last weekend won two-of-three games over Pac-12 foe Washington State at home - including a dramatic come-from-behind 2-1 victory Sunday - hosts No. 18-ranked Cal Poly (26-11) in a non-conference game, Tuesday, April 23 at 5 p.m. at Evans Diamond.
The Golden Bears had three tight battles versus league foe WSU last weekend, winning 4-2 Friday night, losing 7-6 Saturday night, before freshman third baseman Mitchell Kranson had the game-tying RBI and junior shortstop Mike Reuvekamp had the game-winning hit Sunday versus the Cougars Video of Cal's 2-1 Win Over WSU.
It was the third game-winning hit of the season for Reuvekamp, who also had the game-winning sacrifice fly March 9 versus Fresno State, and the game-winning RBI in the 10th inning Feb. 16 versus Michigan. It was his fourth straight game with two hits.
This season, Cal has been led offensively by junior catcher Andrew Knapp, who is hitting .359 (52-for-145) with a team-leading 10 doubles, six home runs and 31 RBI. Knapp, a first-team Preseason All-American in Baseball America, went 6-for-13 versus WSU with a home run and three RBI.
Cal Poly is slated to start freshman right-hander Casey Bloomquist (2-0, 5.50 ERA, 21 strikeouts in 18.0 innings) Tuesday. The Broncos won one-of-three games last weekend versus No. 4-ranked Cal State Fullerton in San Luis Obispo - winning 2-1 and losing 10-5 and 6-4.
The Bears' starter is slated to be senior left-hander Justin Jones (1-4, 5.44 ERA, 28 strikeouts in 41.1 innings). Jones has 24 career victories, tied for fourth on the school's all-time win list, and he has thrown 339.2 career innings, also fourth on Cal's all-time list.
After Tuesday's contest versus Cal Poly, the Bears continue their Pac-12 slate at Washington, April 26-28, for a three-game conference series at Husky Ballpark in Seattle. Gametimes for the series are 5 p.m. Friday, 2 p.m. Saturday night, and 1 p.m. Sunday. The Cal-UW series can also be heard on KALX 90.7 FM.
