California’s Lindsey Ziegenhirt caps off a stellar academic career as the Pac-12 Softball Scholar Athlete of the Year, the league office announced Thursday. The award, which is presented in each of the 22 sports the Pac-12 sponsors, was established to honor collegiate student-athletes who are standouts both academically and in their sports discipline.
Ziegenhirt is the third California athlete to be named the conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year for her respective sport. Women's basketball's Layshia Clarendon and swimming's Caitlin Leverenz were also recognized with the honor.
The Elk Grove, Calif. native and psychology major was awarded her diploma Tuesday after carrying a 3.77 cumulative GPA throughout her academic career at one of the world’s top public universities. She garnered first team Pac-12 All-Academic honors in 2011 and 2012 and earlier Thursday was selected to the Capital One Academic-All America Third Team – softball’s first selection since 2006.
On the diamond, Ziegenhirt was one of this year’s team captains and led the Bears in RBI (54), home runs (17) and slugging percentage (.662). She exits Cal ranked fourth in program history for home runs in a season (17) and career (42), and fifth all-time with 151 career RBI. She was named to the All-Pac-12 Second Team and the NFCA All-Pacific Region First Team, making her eligible for NFCA All-American honors. She adds those accolades to her 2010 All-Pac-10 All-Freshman and Honorable Mention selections.
In order to be eligible for the Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year award, student-athletes must be a senior (in athletics eligibility) on track to receive a degree, have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher, participate in at least 50 percent of the scheduled contests in the sport and have a minimum of one year in residence at the institution. Each Pac-12 institution may nominate one individual per sport, and the winners are selected by a committee of Pac-12 staff members at the conclusion of each sport's regular season. The athletic accomplishments of the nominees are a consideration in the voting for the award.
A Scholar-Athlete of the Year will be named in each of the Pac-12's 22 sponsored sports: baseball, men's basketball, women's basketball, men's cross country, women's cross country, football, men's golf, women's golf, women's gymnastics, men's rowing, women's rowing, men's soccer, women's soccer, softball, men's swimming & diving, women's swimming & diving, men's tennis, women's tennis, men's track & field, women's track & field, women's volleyball, and wrestling.
This is the Cal softball program’s first Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year title since the awards were established during the 2007-08 academic year.
