BERKELEY - The No. 5 Cal women's water polo team led for almost the entire game but was overtaken by two late goals and fell to No. 4 UCLA 4-3 on Friday in the first round of the MPSF Championships at Spieker Aquatics Complex.
The Bears (16-7) will play in Sunday's Fifth Place Game against the loser of Saturday's match between CSU Bakersfield and San Jose State. UCLA advances to play No. 1 Stanford.
Cal got off to a strong start, racing to a 3-0 lead on a pair of goals by junior Ashley Young and another by senior Emily Csikos. The Bears continued to blank the Bruins (25-5) until freshman Rachel Fattal scored the first of her three goals with 2:17 left in the first half. UCLA's Kodi Hill scored with just over a minute remaining in the second quarter to make it 3-2 at the half.
The third quarter was scoreless and it remained 3-2 until Fattal tied it up with 5:09 remaining. Fattal then scored again with 2:07 to go, giving UCLA the 4-3 advantage. Sophomore goalie Savanna Smith made eight goals for the Bears.
In other MPSF action Friday, No. 2 USC defeated No. 7 CSU Bakersfield, 21-5. The Trojans (22-1) got five goals from junior Kaleigh Gilchrist and three each from sophomore Monica Vavic and freshman Jayde Appel. Sophomore Janelle Shelby scored twice for the Roadrunners (12-23).
USC will meet Arizona State on Saturday after the Sun Devils got by San Jose State, 12-8. Senior Alicia Brightwell led ASU (26-5) with four goals while senior Shannon Haas added three. Freshman Rae Lekness scored three times for the Spartans (11-11).
