Golden Bear Pair Advances to Individual Event Finals

STATE COLLEGE, Penn. -

A pair of Golden Bear gymnasts extended the California gymnastics season one more day by advancing past the individual event preliminaries at the NCAA Men's Gymnastics Championship Saturday at Penn State University.

Freshman Takahiro Kawada and sophomore Jonathan Liu will compete in Sunday's NCAA Individual Event championships beginning at 11 a.m. PT. Kawada will compete in the pommel horse event, while Liu will represent Cal in the p bars event.

Kawada earned his spot in the finals with a shared seventh place finish for his 14.700 performance. Liu also finished seventh in his event with a 14.850.

Four other California gymnasts competed in the preliminaries but failed to place within the Top 10 to qualify. Senior Kyle Zemeir (T13, 14.550) competed on the parallel bars and fellow freshman TJ Bzoskie competed on the h bars (T22, 14.200).
