The ninth-ranked California men's gymnastics team is set for NCAA Championship competition, held April 19-21 at Pennsylvania State University in University Park, Penn. Cal will compete in the evening session of the NCAA Qualifier at Rec Hall on Friday, April 19, where the Golden Bears will be joined by top-seeded Penn State, No. 4 Stanford, No. 5 Ohio State, No. 8 Iowa and No. 13 Temple. The first session begins at 10 a.m. PT and features No. 2 Oklahoma, No. 3 Michigan, No. 6 Minnesota, No. 7 Illinois, No. 10 Nebraska and No. 11 Air Force.

"Though most of our team is young and they don't have that NCAA Championship experience, we're telling everyone to take in the experience of competing on a national stage," said California assistant coach JT Okada. "The way we'll gauge our success is not results-based. It's improvement-based."

The top three teams and top three all-around competitors not on one of the qualifying teams, plus the top three individuals on each event not already qualified on a team or as an all-around competitor, will advance from each pre-qualifying session to the finals session. Final competitions will take place April 20 (team finals) and 21 (individual finals). The top eight finishers in each of the six events will be awarded All-America status.

This will be the first national championship event that uses the five-up, five-count system introduced earlier in 2013, in which only five gymnasts can compete per event, and every single competitor's score is counted toward the team total. Previously, six gymnasts could compete with five scores counted, giving teams the ability to drop their lowest score on an event.

"With this new formatting, it gives an opportunity to teams that are more consistent over the more powerful teams that may not always hit," Okada said.

The Bears have a rich history at the NCAA Championships with 216 individual top-10 finishers since 1948, including 30 individual national champions. Cal has finished in the top five at NCAAs 21 times since 1959, including eight times in the last decade with 2012's fourth-place finish. The Bears boast four team national championships - 1968, '75, '97 and '98. The most recent national champion was crowned in 2012, when Glen Ishino claimed the pommel horse crown. Since their back-to-back NCAA titles in `97 and `98, the Bears' best finish in the NCAA Championships was third, which they accomplished in 2001 and 2002. Since 1996, Cal has qualified for the NCAA Championships every year except one (1999).

All-session tickets to the NCAA Championships ($28 Adult, $16 Youth and PSU Students) are on sale now and can be purchased at GoPSUSports.com or by calling the Penn State Ticket Office at 1-800-NITTANY. Single-session tickets area on sale now and will be available for purchase on the day of competition at the Recreation Building at least one hour prior to the event.
