Box Score

Cheyenne Cordes dealt the final blow to Oregon State (26-16, 3-10 Pac-12) with a two-RBI walk-off homer in the fifth inning to lift tenth-ranked California (34-8, 8-5 Pac-12)  to an 8-0 win in the opening game of the series Friday at Levine-Fricke Field.

The sophomore, who went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, helped the Bears to their 15th shutout of the season in the team’s nine-hit, eight-run effort. Sophomore Jolene Henderson (28-7) allowed only two hits and one walk while sending six Beavers to the dugout in her five innings in the circle. Oregon State’s Tina Andreana (5-5) started the series allowing all nine hits plus five walks while striking out three Golden Bears.

The Bears brought three across at the bottom of the second starting with Kostreba’s double up the middle. Junior Victoria Jones sacrifice bunted her to third, and freshman Vanessa Alvarez joined Kostreba on the bases by singling then stealing second. Taylor singled to left field to earn her RBI, and a wild pitch sent Alvarez home. Junior Britt Vonk produced another run with a single to score Taylor.

Another three Golden Bears touched home plate at the bottom of the fourth, again starting with a double – this time from Cordes. She scored on a single by senior Lindsey Ziegenhirt, who was joined on the bases by sophomore Danielle Henderson after she drew a walk. Sophomore Mary Lee and junior LaRisa Jones entered the game to pinch run before Kostreba doubled again to up the score to 6-0.

After Taylor hit a leadoff single at the bottom of the fifth, Cordes made quick work of the game  by thumping the ball into the left field bleachers to bring on the mercy rule.

The series continues Saturday at 1 p.m. at Levine-Fricke Field.
