BERKELEY - The No. 5 Cal women's water polo team closed out its 2013 season by taking fifth place at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships with a 12-8 win over sixth-seeded San Jose State on Sunday at Spieker Aquatics Complex.

The Bears finished the season with an overall record of 17-7.

Cal coach Richard Corso started all six of his seniors - Emily Csikos, Breda Vosters, Dana Ochsner, Kirstn Mase, Taylor Dodson and Remington Price - as they played their final game for the Bears. Fittingly, Cal was led by Vosters, Ochsner and Price, who each scored two goals.

Senior Emily Csikos scored once for the Bears, giving her 215 in her career. Csikos leaves Cal as the program's all-time leading scorer. Vosters finished with 157 career goals, good for sixth on the Bears' all-time scoring list.

After Ochsner and the Spartans' Victoria Smith exchanged early goals, the Bears scored three in a row on goals by Ochsner and sophomores Victoria Williams and Michelle Caron to make it 4-1 at the end of the first quarter. San Jose St. (11-12) never got closer than two the rest of the way.

The Spartans' Bianca Seyfert scored early in the third quarter to cut Cal's lead to 7-5, but the Bears then scored five of the next six goals to take command.

Goalie Savanna Smith made nine saves for the Bears.

Second-seeded USC won the tournament championship with an 11-7 win over top-seeded Stanford in the finals. Junior Hannah Buckling scored four goals for the Trojans (24-1). Senior Melissa Seidemann led the Cardinal (27-2) with three goals.

In the Third Place game, No. 4 UCLA defeated No. 3 Arizona State 10-7. Junior Becca Dorst and freshman Rachel Fattal led the Bruins (26-6) with two goals apiece. Senior Alicia Brightwell and sophomore Ao Gao had three goals each for the Sun Devils (26-7).
