OJAI, Calif. - California's Anett Schutting booked passage to the singles championship semifinals with a quarterfinal win over teammate Klara Fabikova and Tayler Davis hit her own milestone on Friday at the Pac-12 Championships held at the Ojai Valley Athletic Club. Seeded second and ranked eighth nationally, Schutting topped the 62nd-ranked freshman, 6-2, 6-4, to run her record against Fabikova to 2-0. In the singles invitational, Davis also reached the semifinals, after beating Arizona State's Stephanie Vlad, 4-6, 6-1, 1-0(10-6), in the quarterfinals to collect her 100th singles win as a Bear.
Cal sophomore Zsofi Susanyi - the singles championship's top seed - retired with an injury in the second set of her quarterfinal against UCLA's Kyle McPhillips.
In the semis, Schutting will play Stanford's third-seeded Krista Hardebeck in the singles championship and Davis will battle Stanford's Ellen Tsay in the singles invitational, with both matches taking place at 10:30 a.m. at Libbey Park.
Davis had a busy day of four matches, including two in the doubles championship tournament.
"Tayler kind of had a marathon day," Cal head coach Amanda Augustus said. "She had to play doubles and then a singles match that wasn't played yesterday and then doubles and then singles again. Quite the day she had. In her last match she played ASU's Stephanie Vlad, who had just gotten a walkover. Tay had already played three matches by the time they played. That showed her level of fitness. And then Tayler got her 100th win. That kept her motivated, and she really fought through it at the end."
On the first day of doubles play, Cal teams beat USC pairs in both tournaments (doubles championship and doubles invitational) to advance to their respective semifinals. In the doubles championship, the third-seeded and 29th-ranked duo of freshman Lynn Chi and Schutting knocked off Giuliana Olmos/Zoe Scandalis of USC, 8-1, in the quarterfinals. The fourth-seeded duo of sophomore Cecilia Estlander and senior Annie Goransson upset top-seeded Trojans Gabriela DeSimone and Danielle Lao, 9-7, in their doubles invitational quarterfinal battle.
Both sets of semifinals are slated to start at 9 a.m. on Saturday at Libbey Park, with Chi/Schutting playing UCLA's Courtney Dolehide/Pamela Montez and Estlander/Goransson taking on Stanford's Amelia Herring/Lindsey Kostas for berths in Sunday's finals.
The Pac-12 Championships end on Sunday.
