California Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week
May 20, 2013
BERKELEY - Michael Weaver was named the California Muscle Milk Student-Athlete for the second time in his career Monday after leading No. 1 ranked Cal to its second straight NCAA Regional crown by sharing individual medalist honors at the 2013 NCAA Pullman Regional. The victory at the NCAA Pullman Regional was Cal's 11th of the season and gave the Golden Bears the modern-era NCAA record for most wins in a season previously established by the 1985-86 Oklahoma State team.
Weaver (65-67-70 - 202, -14) earned individual medalist honors for the first time in his collegiate career at the NCAA Pullman Regional, while also becoming Cal's first-ever NCAA Regional individual medalist and school-record fifth individual medalist of the 2012-13 season. He shared the title with USC's Sam Smith (62-64-76 - 202, -14) after starting the final round of the 54-hole event at the par-72, 7,308-yard Palouse Ridge Golf Club six strokes off Smith's second-round lead.
Weaver is currently Cal's second-highest nationally-ranked collegiate golfer at No. 9 in the most recent Golfweek rankings. He has a 70.88 stroke average in 2012-13, while ranking second on the team with six top-five finishes and tied for second on the squad with seven top-10 showings. Weaver has been third or higher in four of his last five events.
Weaver made Cal history in April when he became the program's first current golfer to play in the Masters. Weaver (78-74 - 152, +8) played in the first and second rounds of the event and although he did not make the cut, he was tied for second among the six amateurs that participated in the event. Weaver finished as the runner up at the 2012 U.S. Amateur to earn both his Masters invitation as well as an exemption into the 2013 U.S. Open to be played June 13-16 at the East Course at Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pa.
Weaver is the third member of the Cal men's golf team to earn California Muscle Milk Student-Athlete honors in 2012-13 and the second in the past three weeks, following the selections of Michael Kim (March 12, 2013) and Max Homa (May 6, 2013).
Weaver previously won the honor during his freshman campaign on May 24, 2010.
In addition to its win at the NCAA Pullman Regional, the 2012-13 Cal squad that has been ranked No. 1 since winning its first two events of the season has also been victorious at the Gopher Invitational, PING/Golfweek Preview (shared with Georgia Tech), Pac-12 Preview, Alister MacKenzie Invitational, Isleworth Collegiate Invitational, John A. Burns Intercollegiate, Fresno State Lexus Classic, Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters, Western Intercollegiate and Pac-12 Championship. Cal has won 17 of its last 27 tournaments overall dating back to the beginning of the 2011-12 season and finished in the top five in all 27.
Cal will conclude its 2012-13 season at the NCAA Championship hosted by Georgia Tech May 28 - June 2 at the Capital City Club Crabapple Course near Atlanta in Milton, Ga. The Bears will be playing at the NCAA Championship for a school-record fourth consecutive season and the ninth time in school history.
