Ryan Cobb, MS, ATC
Associate Athletic Director - Performance, Health & Welfare
Sport Assignment: Men’s Golf
Working in Sports Medicine and Intercollegiate Athletics for nearly 20 years, Ryan works closely with the campus to provide services to Cal's Intercollegiate Student Athletes, as well as helping to foster collaboration and integration between Athletics and many other campus units and services. Cobb completed his undergraduate work at Vanderbilt University, including gaining his board certification in Athletic Training, and earning a degree in Human and Organizational Development. While earning a Master’s Degree in Exercise Physiology, Cobb began working at UC Berkeley in 1997. Other than short stints back at Vanderbilt, and as the Head Athletic Trainer at St. Mary’s College of California, Cobb has been at Cal ever since. Serving as Cal's Head Athletic Trainer since 2003, Cobb oversees areas related to Performance, Health and Welfare, including Sports Medicine, Strength & Conditioning, Nutrition Services, Risk Management, Student Athlete Development, and coordinating all medical services in conjunction with the UHS Head Team Physician and UHS Medical Director at University Health Services. He also is the administrator overseeing Cal's Men's and Women's Gymnastics teams, Men's Rugby program, and Men's Crew program. Additionally, Cobb helps to maintain campus partnership and committee work to campus areas related to welfare, health and conduct. These include Residential and Housing Services, the Dean of Students Office, UCPD, Berkeley Police, at least one Chancellor's Advisory Committee, the Student Risk Sub Committee of Compliance and Enterprise Risk Committee, the Violence Prevention Collaboration, and other student and campus prevention and education efforts.
 
Laura Dixon, MS, ATC
Associate Head Athletic Trainer

Laura joined the Sports Medicine staff in 2011. She comes to Cal mostly recently from Saint Mary’s College where she worked as an athletic trainer from 2003-2011. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise Sport Science from Oregon State University in 2000, and a Master of Science degree in Kinesiology from California State University, Hayward in 2003. She also worked as a Graduate Assistant Athletic Trainer at Cal from 2001-2003.
 
Elaine Garcia, MS, ATC, CSCS
Associate Athletic Trainer

Elaine joined the Sports Medicine staff in 1999. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Physiological Sciences from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1993, and a Master of Science degree in Sports Healthcare from the Arizona School of Health Science in 1997.
 
Robert Jackson, MS, ATC, PES, CES
Associate Athletic Trainer

Robbie joined the Sports Medicine staff in 2012 as the Head Football Athletic Trainer. He comes to Cal mostly recently from Georgia Southern University, where he was the Head Football Athletic Trainer from 2008-2012. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education specializing in Kinesiology from the University of Kentucky in 2003, and a Master of Science degree in Health and Human Performance from the University of Tennessee, Chattanooga in 2005. He also worked as an athletic trainer at the University of Central Florida from 2006-2008, and Christopher Newport University from 2005-2006.
 
Barry Parsons, MEd, ATC

Barry joined the Sports Medicine staff in 2004. He comes to Cal most recently from Wofford College where he was an Assistant Athletic Trainer from 1999-2004. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology from Kansas State University in 1999, and a Master of Education degree from Converse College in 2003.
 
Michael Branzel, DPT
Physical Therapist
Mike joined the Sports Medicine staff in 2012. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise Biology from the University of California, Davis, and a Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Samuel Merritt University. Outside of athletics, Mike currently sees patients at University Health Services and has done so since 2009.
 
Nakiesha Brooks-Davis, MS, ATC

Nakiesha joined the Sports Medicine Staff in 2012. She comes to Cal most recently from Sonoma State University where she was an Assistant Athletic Trainer from 2011-2012. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology from The Pennsylvania State University in 2005, and a Master of Science degree in Kinesiology and Health Promotion from the University of Kentucky in 2007. She also worked as an athletic trainer at Kentucky State University from 2007-2011.
 
Ann Caslin, MA, ATC

Ann joined the Sports Medicine staff in 2005. She comes to Cal most recently from Vanderbilt University where she was an Assistant Athletic Trainer from 1999-2005. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology & Physical Education from California State University, Hayward in 1996, and a Master of Arts degree in Human Performance from San Jose State University in 1999. She also worked as a Graduate Assistant Athletic Trainer at Stanford University from 1997-1999.
 
Lauren Forsyth, MS, ATC, CES
Assistant Athletic Trainer

Lauren joined the Sports Medicine staff in 2012 as a certified intern. She was later hired as an Assistant Athletic Trainer in 2014. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Athletic Training from California State University, Fullerton in 2012, and a Master of Science degree in Rehabilitation Science from California University of Pennsylvania in 2013. She has also worked as a Governmental Affairs Representative for athletic training at the national (NATA), district (FWATA), and state (California) levels since 2012.
 
Brenden Lambert, MS, ATC, CES, PES

Brenden joined the Sports Medicine staff in 2010 as a certified intern. He was later hired as an Assistant Athletic Trainer in 2012. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Athletic Training from Long Beach State University in 2009, and a Master of Science degree in Exercise Science & Health Promotion from California University of Pennsylvania in 2011. He also worked as an Intern Athletic Trainer with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in 2009.
 
Brynn Lewis, MS, ATC

Brynn joined the Sports Medicine staff in 2011 as a certified intern. She was later hired as an Assistant Athletic Trainer in 2013. She graduated with a combination Bachelor and Master of Science degree in Sports Science & Athletic Training from Long Island University, Brooklyn in 2011.
 
Justin Matlage, MS, ATC

Justin joined the Sports Medicine staff in 2013. He comes to Cal mostly recently from Vanderbilt University where he was an Assistant Athletic Trainer from 2012-2013. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Athletic Training from the University of Northern Iowa in 2007, and a Master of Science degree in Athletic Training from West Virginia University in 2009. He also worked as an athletic trainer at Georgia Southern University from 2010-2012, and with the Carolina Panthers from 2009-2010.
 
Liz Nguyen, DPT
Physical Therapist
Liz joined the Sports Medicine staff in 2011. She attended Mount St. Mary’s University where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology in 1998, a Bachelor of Arts degree in Gerontology in 1998, and a Doctorate in Physical Therapy in 2007. In addition to working with student-athletes, Liz sees patients at University Health Services.
 
Carol Rogers, MA, ATC, CSCS

Carol joined the Sports Medicine staff in 1990. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Massachusetts in 1977, and a Master of Arts degree from the University of North Carolina in 1978.

Rachel joined the Sports Medicine staff in 2014. She comes to Cal most recently from Saint Mary’s College where she was an Assistant Athletic Trainer from 2007-2014. Casey Batten, MD
Head Team Physician
Dr. Batten has been with Cal Athletics since 2006, and was named Head Team Physician in 2010. Prior to Cal, Batten was an assistant clinical professor of orthopedics at the University of California, San Francisco. He also has provided medical coverage for NCAA championship events including men’s and women’s basketball, track & field, and FCS football. In addition to his responsibilities with the student-athletes at Cal, Dr. Batten is an invited speaker on various sports medicine topics on the local and national levels. He also serves as a peer reviewer for two respected sports medicine publications. He is published on topics such as concussion, and physical activity factors in adolescent athletes. As a member of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM), Dr. Batten is active in committee work dedicated to expanding the quality and availability of sports medicine training for medical students and resident physicians. Dr. Batten holds a Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology-Exercise Science from the University of Wisconsin. After attending medical school at the Medical College of Wisconsin, he completed a residency in Family Medicine at the University of Tennessee College of Medicine-Chattanooga Unit. Batten then earned a fellowship with the UC Davis/UC Berkeley Sports Medicine Program. Born and raised in Madison, WI, Dr. Batten currently resides with his wife, Alison, and daughter, Lily, in Berkeley.
 
Lindsay Huston, MD
Associate Team Physician
Lindsay joined the sports medicine staff in 2013. She is fellowship trained in sports medicine, and was previously the Team Physician at Yale University.
 
Harris Masket, MD
Associate Team Physician
A Cal alum, Harris was Cal’s post-graduate sports medicine intern before becoming the Chief of Urgent Care at University Health Services in 2005.
 
Jeffrey Nelson, MD
Associate Team Physician
A Cal grad and fellowship trained in sports medicine, Jeff has been a team physician and staff physician at University Health Services since 1998.
 
Brad Buchman, MD
Medical Director of Cal’s University Health Services, as well as a Cal alumnus and former Golden Bear football player from 1979-81.
 
Cindy Chang, MD
Served as Cal’s Head Team Physician from 1995-2008. She serves part-time at the University Health Services as a sports medicine consultant/musculoskeletal specialist, and volunteers as a team physician. Chang is recognized as one of the leading primary care sports medicine physicians in the country.
 
Craig Dennis, MD
Craig is board certified in emergency medicine, and has a special interest in water polo. His daughter was a Cal water polo goalie.
 
Veronica Jow, MD
Veronica is a fellowship trained sports medicine specialist who assists in event coverage.

Christina Allen, MD
Christina played soccer and earned her biomedical engineering degree at Duke, and is a sports medicine fellowship-trained assistant professor of orthopedics at UCSF.
 
Lamont Cardon, MD
A former Cal football player, Lamont is a fellowship trained orthopedic consultant for hand, wrist and upper extremity injuries and practices in Berkeley.
 
Robert Eppley, MD
Robert played collegiate basketball at Swarthmore College, and has been one of Cal’s primary orthopedic consultants since 1992. Fellowship-trained in sports medicine, he is in private practice in Berkeley, and is repeatedly voted one of the “Bay Area’s Best Doctors” by fellow physicians.
 
Sara Edwards, MD
Sara is fellowship trained at Columbia University. She practices out of SOAR Medical Group in Redwood City, and is a shoulder and knee consultant.
 
Joshua Hatch, MD
Josh played football at Princeton. He was fellowship trained in sports medicine at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City and is in practice at Kaiser-Oakland.
 
Clement Jones, MD
Clem played football at Merrimack College in Massachusetts, and is Cal’s fellowship trained orthopedic spine consultant in private practice in San Francisco.
 
Benjamin Ma, MD
Ben is chief of sports medicine at UCSF, and did a sports medicine fellowship at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City.
 
Jeffrey Mann, MD
Jeff was a gymnast at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and is a fellowship-trained orthopedic foot and ankle consultant in private practice in Oakland.
 
Mathias Masem, MD
Mathias is a fellowship trained orthopedic consultant for hand, wrist and upper extremity injuries. The Chief of the Division of Hand Surgery at Alta-Bates Summit Medical Center, he is in private practice in Oakland.
 
William Workman, MD
A member of Cal’s 1988 College World Series baseball team, Will is a fellowship trained orthopedic sports medicine consultant in private practice in Walnut Creek. He is also an orthopedic consultant for the Oakland Athletics.

Suzanne Nelson, ScD, RD

Suzanne has been the fulltime sports nutritionist for Cal Athletics since. She is a consultant to the San Francisco Giants and previously was the team nutritionist for the San Francisco 49ers. Prior, she served as the Director of Sports Nutrition in Athletics at the University of Washington, and was an adjunct Instructor in Nutrition in the Department of Epidemiology.

Dan Westbrook

Dan joined the Sports Medicine staff in 2003. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English in 1999, and a Master of Fine Arts degree in Creative Writing in 2007 from San Francisco State University. He has worked out of University Health Services since 1998.

PSYCHOLOGISTS
  Chris McLean, PhD, is a staff psychologist at University Health Services who provides and coordinates counseling & psychological services for student athletes and the entire student body.
PHYSIATRISTS
 

Gerald Keane, MD, is in private practice in Menlo Park and is trained in physical medicine and rehabilitation for non-operative injuries of the neck and back, as well as nerve disorders.
Timothy Shen, MD, completed a physiatry spine and sports medicine fellowship at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City. He practices in Oakland and Lafayette.

PODIATRISTS
 

Tim Dutra, DPM, is an assistant professor at the California School of Podiatric Medicine at Samuel Merritt University. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine and holds a master's in Health Care Administration.
Maureen Lee, DPM, is in private practice in San Francisco and also serves as a consultant for San Francisco State University’s athletic program.

James Ho, DMD, is a Cal grad, and is an endodontist practicing in Berkeley.
Whitney Johnson, DDS, is a fellow in the International Academy for Sports Dentistry and a board director on the Berkeley Dental Society practicing in Berkeley.

The UC Berkeley School of Optometry, under the clinical supervision of Dr. Mika Moy and Dr. Chris Wilmer, provides visual screenings and also serves as a consultant for ocular injuries and ocular medical conditions.

Caroline D’Angelo, MA, OTR/L, CHT, CEAS, specializes in the evaluation and treatment of orthopedic hand injuries and conditions.

Sue Bromley, DC, PA-C, has worked with NASCAR, the Professional Rodeo Association, and the San Jose Lasers. She practices in Berkeley.
Rudy Gutierrez, DC, ART, CSCS, ATC, has been a member of the Cal sports medicine department since 1998. He currently works as a sport chiropractor in his private practice in Oakland and Walnut Creek.

ACUPUNCTURISTS
 

Glen Oberman, OMD, LAc, has been involved with Cal Sports Medicine since 2007. He supervises the treatment of Cal student-athletes by acupuncture interns from the Acupuncture and Integrative Medicine College in Berkeley. He is Clinic Dean at the college, and has a national board certification in Acupuncture Orthopedics. He also teaches courses in Acupuncture Orthopedics, Research Methodology and Ethics, and Law. Dr. Oberman is in private practice in Berkeley.
