Cal Men's and Women's Varsity Crews Take Second at Pac-10's

LAKE NATOMA, Ca. - The California men's and women's varsity crews each finished second behind the University of Washington in their respective events at the Pac-10 Rowing Championships, Sunday, May 18, in Sacramento.

In the men's varsity race the both Cal and UW got off to good starts but by the 500 meter mark, the Huskies edged out to a half length lead. The crews battled over the last 1500 meters with the Huskies leading by no more than a six seats. Despite a strong sprint by the Bears, they could not close the margin finishing 1.1 seconds or four seats back as the crews crossed the finish line.

"I think we had a better race today than we had when we raced them (UW) in Seattle," said Cal coach Steve Gladstone. "It's hard on the crew as well as myself not to win that kind of a race, but we'll bounce back. We showed today that we are racing at a very high level and we've only just begun the championship portion of our season. Our goal has always been an IRA championship and the IRA final is less than two weeks away. We expect to be there and I hope the Huskies will be too. The varsity deserves another chance at them this season."

The Cal women's varsity eight also had a strong race on Saturday despite its second-place finish. The No. 2-ranked crew on the West Coast, the Bears got off the line well and raced the first 1000 meters just behind the Huskies, while distancing itself from the rest of the field. Washington shifted into overdrive in the last thousand while the Bears held off a late push from Oregon State finishing one length ahead of the Beavers as they crossed the line.

"We proved today that we are a legitimate varsity crew," said coach Anna Considine. "Today's margin was the same as it was three weeks ago in Seattle. We still have our work cut out for us, but if the crew can find a little more boat speed, we will be in good position to challenge for a berth in the final at the NCAA Women's Rowing Championships at the end of the month."

In other racing the Cal men's JV had a good race, but could not stop the Huskies from repeating as Pac-10 champions. In the frosh event, the Bears, who had won three consecutive Pac-10 titles, fell short of their bid for a fourth, picking up the silver in 1997.

The women's novice eight finished a disappointing third behind the Huskies and Oregon State, while the JV, which was made up primarily rowers from the second novice eight finished fifth.

The Cal men will race next at the IRA regatta in Camden, NJ, May 29-31, while the women's varsity expects to receive a invitation to the first ever NCAA Women's Rowing Championship, May 30-June first at Lake Natoma in Sacramento.
