Cal Participates in San Diego Crew Classic
SAN DIEGO -- The Cal men's varsity eight finished second to the Washington Huskies in the Grand Final of the Copley Cup, Sunday April 6 at the San Diego Crew Classic on Mission Bay. The Huskies moved out on the entire field in the early going and held on for their third-consecutive victory, while the Bears used a strong spring to close a one-boat length margin held by both Penn and Wisonsin over the final 500 meters of the race. Entering the final 20 strokes of the race Cal remained in fourth place but nipped both crews at the line.
"You can never be satisfied with a second place finish," said Steve Gladston, who returns to Cal this season after previously coaching the Bears from 1972-1980. "However, I think that the result will give the crew confidence. It is good starting point for the season and gives us a yardstick with which we can use to evalute progress. We will face the Huskies at least two and possibly three more times this season and we now begin the task of creating more boat speed and erasing the margin."
In other racing, the men's novice eight finished second to the Huskies while the women's novice finished third behind both Virginia and Washington. The Bears men's JV eight finished a disappointing fourth in its race as they were unable to find a strong rhythm in Sunday's final.
Neither the women's varsity nor JV qualified for the grand final in their respective events. The varsity finished third in the Whittier Cup Petite final on Saturday for an overall ninth place finish while the JV finished its regatta with an overall 11th place outcome after a fifth place performance in the petite final on Sunday morning.
The only victory for the Bears came in the men's second novice event as Cal handled the competition including second place Orange Coast by a margin of nearly six seconds.
