Cal Defeats Tennessee Tech, 85-67

BERKELEY, CA -- A career night 26 points and 12 rebounds by Jennie Leander led the California Golden Bears (4-3) to a 85-67 victory over the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles (3-3) in the first round of the Oakland Tribune Classic. The Golden Bears remain undefeated in Harmon Gym (4-0) and will play Michigan State in the championship game Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

Michigan State posted a 91-71 win over UC Irvine in the other first round game tonight in Harmon Gym. Tomorrow California will be shooting for its sixth consecutive Oakland Tribune Classic title, while UC Irvine and Tennessee Tech will meet at 5:30 p.m. in the consolation game.

California led Tennessee Tech the entire game, shooting a season high 50.8 percent (32-63) from the field and 85.7 percent (18-21) from the line. Establishing control early in the game with an 18-8 run, the Golden Bears led by 11 at the half, 44-33.

The Golden Eaglettes second half muched like their first, as their shooting percentage went from 33.3 percent (12-36) in the first, to only 36.1 percent (13-36) in the second and the Bears easily maintained the lead.

Head coach Marianne Stanley said, "We did a good job of working together to find scoring opportunities. We played exceptionally ell, and I'm estatic that we were able to put up more than 40 points in each half.

Senior forward Patrycja Czepiec added 20 points for the Golden Bears, and freshman Geneva McDaniel put up a career-high 11 points in addition to grabbing nine rebounds. Diane Seng led the Golden Eaglettes with 28 points and 10 rebounds, and Amber Clark put up 14 points.

Michigan State guard Tamika Matlock dished out a Classic record 14 assists in the first game, breaking the old mark of 13 set in 1984. Paula Sanders led Michigan State with 23 points and 12 rebounds. For UC Irvine, Lellticia Oseguera scored a game-high 27 points and added nine rebounds.
