Czepiec Scores 1,000th Point in Loss

BERKELEY, Calif. - Senior forward Patrycja Czepeic scored a game-high 23 points to become the 13th player in Cal history to hit the 1,000-point plateau, but it wasn't enough as the Washington Huskies downed Cal 85-62 in Pacific 10 Conference action Thursday at Harmon gym.

Washington improved to 13-9 overall, 8-5 in the Pac-10, while Cal dropped to 6-17 overall and 2-12 in the Pac-10. The Bears loss was their ninth-straight defeat and the 10th-straight loss to Washington dating back to 1992.

The teams were tied at halftime, 28-28, but Washington opened the second half with a 21-4 run in the first six minutes, taking a commanding 49-32 lead. Czepiec, who entered the game with 987-career points in her three season, hit the 1,000-point mark on a 3-point jumper from the top of the key with 13:19 remaining in the game. She becomes just the second Cal player to hit that milestone while playing only three season, following Jackie Lear who scored 1,221 points from 1992-95.

Cal actually outshot Washington from the field, 44.2 percent to 42.9 percent, but the Huskies did their damage on the boards, outrebounding Cal by a significant 60-26 advantage. Washington actually had both more offensive rebounds (31) and defensive rebounds (29) than Cal did as a team (26).

The Huskies had four players score in double figures, led by the 19 points and career-high eight assists from San Francisco-native Jamie Redd. In addition to Czepiec's 23 points, she finished with four assists, two blocked shots and three steals.

Cal is back in action Saturday at noon in a nationally-televised game (Fox Sports) against the Washington State Cougars.
