Bruins Bomb Bears

BERKELEY, Calif. - The UCLA Bruins used a dominating second half to post a 82-56 victory over host California Thursday in Harmon Gym. The Bruins outscored the Bears 44-23 in the second half, and improve to 10-9 overall, 4-6 in the Pac-10. With the loss, Cal fell to 6-13 overall, 2-8 in the Pac-10.

The Bears got off to a great start, taking a 14-3 lead in the first four minutes of the game. UCLA worked its way back to tie the game, 20-20, with 7:29 left in the first half, and the Bruins took a 38-33 lead into halftime.

The Bears were down by only six points, 52-46, with 13:01 remaining in the game, until UCLA ripped off 13 unanswered points to take a commanding 65-46 lead with 8:13 left in the game.

Cal was led by the season-high 28 points of senior forward Patrycja Czepiec, but senior guard Liz Rizzo was the only other Bear in double figures with 12 points, all coming on 3-pointers. Cal played without starting point guard Sherrise Smith who will undergo an MRI exam Friday for a right knee injury, and top reserve Paige Bowie, who is out for the season with a hand injury.

UCLA was led by the 21 points of guard Melanie Pearson, and Takiyah Jackson came off the bench to add 13 points.

For the game, UCLA shot an impressive 51.8 percent from the field, while Cal managed just 34.6 percent. UCLA killed the Bears on the boards, outrebounding Cal 47-19.

Cal's next action is Saturday at 2 p.m. in Harmon Gym, as they host the USC Trojans in a game to be televised nationally by Fox Sports.
