Michigan State Defeats Cal, 93-62, To Win Oakland Tribune Classic

BERKELEY, CA -- Tournament MVP Paula Sanders scored 14 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead Michigan State to a 93-62 victory over host California in the championship round of the Oakland Tribune Classic Saturday at Harmon Gym. UC Irvine defeated Tennessee Tech, 78-67, in the consolation final.

Sanders, who had a two-game total of 37 points and 25 rebounds, was joined on the all-tournament team by teammates Tamika Matlock and Nicole Cushing. Also named to the all-tournament team were Cal's Jennie Leander, UC Irvine's Leticia Oseguera and Tennessee Tech's Diane Seng.

California (4-5) opened the game with a 9-2 run, but Michigan State (8-2) regained control to take the lead, 17-16, with 11:40 left in the period. The Bears tied it up, 29-29, with 5:02 remaining, but despite hitting six first half three-pointers, Cal was trailing at halftime, 42-32.

Cal head coach Marianne Stanley said, "I'm really disappointed. We just got beat in every defensive category you could think of."

The loss was Cal's first defeat in Harmon Gym this season, after four straight victories.

Senior guard Liz Rizzo led the Bears with 17 points, including five three-point baskets. Michigan State's Tamika Matlock had a single game tournament record 15 assists, after setting the record with 14 assists in the first round against UC Irvine. Matlock, along with teammate Nicole Cushing, and Sanders each scored 14 points for the Spartans.

In the consolation game, Leticia oseguera led UC Irvine with 27 points and 13 rebounds as the Anteaters posted a 78-67 win over Tennessee Tech. Megan Stafford added 19 points and 11 rebounds for UC Irvine, while Amber Clark put up 17 points for the Golden Eaglettes.

The Bears will be back in action at Saint Mary's Dec. 28 to take on the Gaels at 7:30 p.m.
