Gaels Down California, 70-61

MORAGA, Calif. - Liz Wilkinson scored 20 of her 22 points in the second half as the Saint Mary's (4-5) women's team defeated the University of California 70-61 Saturday evening at Moraga. The win is the second in a row for the Gaels over the 4-5 Golden Bears.

The Gaels trailed 25-24 at the half, but shot .591 (13-22) from the field in the second half and limited Cal to .369 field goal percentage for the game. Gael point guard Mollie Flint chipped in with 12 points, five assists and four steals, and Kelly Parkinen added 10 points. Patrycja Czepiec led Cal with 20 points and Sherisse Smith added 17.

The catalyst for SMC, besides Wilkinson, was junior Tori Chung. Chung connected on three consecutive three-pointers to push the four-point SMC lead to 11 points (55-44) with just under 10 minutes to play.

Saint Mary's forced 24 Cal turnovers and battled Cal even on the boards, with 40 apiece. Junior Jamie Shine led the way with a career-high 10 rebounds, while Jennie Leander added 11 for Cal.

In a sloppy first half, Cal used a 10-2 run to take a 25-24 halftime lead in the final minutes of the half. Each team shot poorly, .310 for SMC and .357 for Cal, in the initial stanza.

The Gaels came out strong in the second half and took back the lead as Wilkinson used her size and strength inside. Wilkinson was 6-9 from the field and 10-11 from the free throw line. The 22 points is a season-high for her and matches her total in last season's 77-76 SMC win in Harmon Gym.
