Cal Loses Tough One to Oregon, 68-64

BERKELEY, Calif. - The California Golden Bears almost pulled off the upset of the season, missing a last-second shot to fall to the Oregon Ducks, 68-64, in Pac-10 action in Harmon Gym Saturday.

The Bears (6-9, 2-4) were down by just two points, 66-64, with 15.9 seconds remaining and called a timeout. Cal came out and senior guard Liz Rizzo launched a 3-point attempt from the left side that bounced off the rim, and Oregon (11-3, 4-1) grabbed the rebound and was fouled. Oregon's Lisa Bowyer sank both ends of a one-and-one free throw opportunity with 7.1 seconds left to provide the final margin.

Oregon led by nine points, 54-45, with 9:47 remaining, but Cal rallied back to tie the game, 56-56 with 6:22 left, before Rizzo canned a pair of 3-pointers to bring the Bears back within two points, 66-64.

The Ducks threatened to make the game a runaway early, taking a 15-3 lead in the first seven minutes of the game. At that point, Cal head coach Marianne Stanley was whistled for a technical foul, which seemed to rally the Golden Bears. Cal went on a 18-10 run over the next eight minutes to pull within four points, 25-21. Oregon led at halftime, 32-24.

Senior forward Patrycja Czepiec scored a team-high 16 points for the Bears, while Rizzo added 11 points. For the Ducks, Renae Fegent scored 12 points, and Arianne Boyer and Lisa Bowyer added 11 points each.

Cal's next game is Thursday, January 23 at Washington State at 7 p.m.
