Ohio State Knocks Off Cal to Take Oakland Tribune Classic TitleGame Statistics
OAKLAND, Calif. -- Tournament most valuable player Larecha Jones scored a game-high 27 points to lead the Ohio State Buckeyes past California, 85-72, in the Championship Game of the Oakland Tribune Classic Saturday night at the Kaiser Arena in Oakland.
Jones headed a list of three Buckeyes in double figures including All-Tournament selection Jamie Lewis who posted a double-double with 21 points and 11 assists and Marrita Porter who added 10 points in the win which improved Ohio State to 7-2 on the season.
Cal's Jennie Leander scored a team-high 20 points and Amber Lacey, who added 19 points, were also selected to the All-Tournament Team for the Golden Bears, who fell to 4-5 with the loss.
The Bears opened the game with a 10-0 run and maintained that lead, 34-24, with 3:53 remaining in the first half. Ohio State then finished the half with a 12-1 run, taking a 36-35 lead on a three-point play by Roslyn Barker with six seconds remaining in the half.
Cal was able to tie the game at 60-60 with 6:48, but the Buckeyes outscored the Bears 25-12 down the stretch to secure the victory.
The two other players selected for the All-Tournament team were Alisha Hill of Howard and Krista Jay of George Mason.
Cal will return to action Dec. 28 when they host the Virginia Cavaliers for its final non-conference game of the season at 2:00 p.m. in Kaiser Arena.
