Cal Falls in Second Round of Hawaii Tourney, 59-58
HONOLULU - The women's basketball team battled right down to the wire in the second round of the Rainbow Wahine Classic Saturday, but a top-of-the-key jumper by sophomore Paige Bowie missed the mark and the Bears fell to Wisconsin-Green Bay, 59-58.
The game was tied, 53-53, with 2:40 remaining, but Wisconsin-Green Bay scored five unanswered points to take a 58-53 lead with 1:45 left in the game. Cal battled back to within one, 59-58, on a Paige Bowie jumper with 0:25 remaining.
After a fowl by the Bears, Wisconsin-Green Bay's Amanda Trout missed a pair of free throws with 15 seconds left in the game and Cal brought the ball up court for the final shot, but Bowie's 15-foot jumper bounced off the rim.
Bowie and junior center Jennie Leander led Cal with 16 points each, and Leander grabbed a team-high eight rebounds. Forward Cheri Nordgaard led UWGB with 16 points.
Cal (1-3) moves on to face Marshall University in the seventh place game Sunday at 4:00 p.m. (6:00 p.m. Pacific)
