Hawaii Defeats Cal, 69-40

HONOLULU - The University of Hawaii remained undefeated, as they downed The University of California, 69-40, in first round action of the Rainbow Wahine Classic on Friday. Hawaii is now 3-0 on the season, and faces Indiana in the second round of play Saturday, while Cal drops to 1-2 on the season, and will take on Wisconsin-Green Bay on Saturday.

In other first round action, Iowa State defeated Idaho, 77-64, and Alabama downed Marshall, 91-62. The tournament, which is being played under the expiramental four-quarter format, continues through Sunday.

Hawaii jumped out to a 10-8 lead after the first period, and then ran off 11 unanswered points to take a commanding 21-8 lead midway through the the second quarter. Hawaii led 33-15 at halftime, and continued to extend the lead throughout the second half, and the Bears were not able to come closer than within 16 points in the second half.

The Bears total of 40 points was their lowest scoring output since March 2, 1996, when they dropped an 87-36 decision to Stanford. Cal shot just 23 percent from the field for the game (17-for-74), while Hawaii shot 41 percent from the floor (27-for-66). Cal did outrebound Hawaii, 55-46, but committed a season-high 26 turnovers.

Freshman point guard Masa Radovic led the Bears with 12 points, while senior Amber Lacey posted her second double-double of the season with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Hawaii guard Nani Cockett led all scorers with 19 points.
