Golden Bears Fall to St. Mary's, 62-59

OAKLAND-- Freshman point guard Masa Radovic led the Bears in scoring with 13 points and freshman guard Courtney Johnson added 10 points but it wasn't enough as the California women's basketball team fell to Saint Mary's, 62-59, Friday at the Kaiser Arena.

Cal took a 32-26 lead into the locker room at halftime behind the hot play of Radovic, who registered 10 of her points in the first half. But down the stretch the Bears just didn't have enough as Saint Mary's outscored Cal 12-6 over the final 3:03 to hand the Bears their first loss in the last three outings.

"That run that they put on broke our backs," Cal coach Marianne Stanley said following the game. " At that moment, they stepped up and did what they were supposed to do. We didn't."

Cal had an opportunity to put the game away midway through the second half as the Bears, who were down 40-38 with 12:06 to play, put together a 9-0 run to go ahead 47-40 at the 7:51 mark. But Cal coundn't keep up the momentum over the game's final minutes.

"We needed to go for the jugular, to keep doing what we were doing, but we didn't," Stanley said.

The Gaels were led by Tracy Morris who scored 19 points and had nine rebounds as the Gaels improved to 3-1 on the season. The loss dropped Cal to 3-4.

The Bears return to action Friday Dec. 19 at 7:30 p.m. when they face George Mason in the second game of the Oakland Tribune Classic. The two-day tournament, which will be hosted by Cal, also features Ohio State and Howard who will meat in the first game at 5:30.
