Oregon Defeats Cal in Pac-10 Opener, 71-54

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Oregon's Angelina Wolvert scored 16 points to lead the Oregon Ducks to a 71-54 victory over the host California Golden Bears in the Pac-10 Conference opener for both teams Friday at Kaiser Arena. The Ducks, last year's Pac-10 runner-up, improved to 5-4 on the season, while the Bears fell to 4-7 with their third consecutive loss.

Oregon used a 13-0 run early in the first half to take a 21-6 lead. The Ducks then ripped off another 11-0 streak to take a commanding 34-10 lead with 3:12 remaining in the opening session. The Bears rallied to hit four straight baskets and cut the Ducks' lead to 34-18 at intermission.

After trailing by as many as 24 points in the first half, the Bears battled back to within seven points midway through the second half and trailed just 61-54 with 2:06 left in the game when Jennie Leander hit a driving layup. But Oregon held the Bears scoreless for the remainder of the game, making eight free throws, along with a basket by freshman Brianne Meharry, to seal the victory.

"We dug a huge hole in the first half," Cal head coach Marianne Stanley said. "But we were game in getting ourselves out of it.

"I was not happy with the outcome but we can't get discouraged with what took place. Our mission is not to get swept in the opening weekend of Pac-10 play."

Cal featured a balanced scoring attack, with senior forward Amber Lacey and junior center Jennie Leander scoring 12 points each, and freshman guard Masa Radovic adding 11 points. Lacey, who scored all her points in the second half, also led Cal with eight rebounds.

Oregon won the game at the free throw line, sinking 24-of-26 attempts, while Cal converted on six-of-seven free throws. Oregon shot an impressive 46.8 percent from the field (22-of-47), while the Bears managed just 36.9 percent field goal shooting (36.9).

The Bears will continue their current homestand n Sunday, Jan. 4 when they host the Oregon State Beavers at 3:00 p.m. at the Kaiser Arena in Oakland. The game will be telecast live nationally on Fox Sports Net.
