November 16, 1998

Amber White, a 6-0 forward/guard from Narbonne High School in Harbor City, Calif., has signed a national letter of intent to play basketball at the University of California, head coach Marianne Stanley announced today. White is the first recruit to officially join the 1999-00 Cal basketball team.

"I'm thrilled that Amber is joining the Cal program," said Stanley. "She reminds me of the movie The Right Stuff. She has all the right stuff. She never backs down from a challenge. Her versatility and work ethic jump out at you.

"She is a winner having played for Narbonne, who has a won a championship. That kind of understanding of winning at the highest level is what we want as a hallmark of the Bears program."

White led Narbonne as a junior to the 1998 CIF Division I state title, averaging 12 points, eight rebounds, five assists and four steals. White turned heads during the finals by holding Berkeley star Aisha Hollans, Cal-Hi's sophomore of the year, to nine points through three quarters. White, known for her defensive prowess, was selected as a junior honorable mention All-America by Student Sports Magazine. Additionally, she was named All-Conference as a sophomore and junior and All-Area and All-City as a junior.

The fall signing period continues through Wednesday, November 18.
