A veteran player who is trying to make the difficult transition from linebacker to safety for his final collegiate season...played very well in pass situations a year ago, but size factor limited his effectiveness against running teams...has excellent intelligence and is a fearless player, but still has a lot to learn in a new position...should provide depth in the secondary and will continue to be an important special teams contributor...

1999...Saw a significant amount of playing time in the absence of an injured Matt Beck...came in for Beck late in the first quarter at Nebraska and recorded four assisted tackles and a fumble recovery...made his first collegiate start vs. Arizona State and responded with six unassisted tackles, including one behind the line...made a big special teams play when he blocked an Oregon State punt in the fourth quarter that rolled out of bounds at the Beaver 22-yard-line to set up a Cal scoring opportunity...ended the season with 20 tackles, including 12 unassisted stops...had three tackles behind the line for minus 11 yards...

1998...saw action in the first two games until he suffered a torn biceps muscle and ultimately utilized a redshirt year...had a pair of tackles in the Houston opener and one unassisted stop against Nebraska.

Junior College/High School/Personal: Earned second team All-America honors from JC Gridwire as a sophomore at El Camino CC in 1997...also was a JC All-American Scholar-Athlete...was a second team all-state selection as named by the California State Junior College Coaches Association and was twice a named to the All-Mission Conference first team...is the all-time leading tackler in El Camino CC history with 235 stops...recorded 118 tackles as a sophomore in 1997, including 12 for loss...also had six interceptions, 17 pass deflections, five forced fumbles and four fumble recoveries that season...originally attended Dorsey HS in Los Angeles where he was an all-city first team selection as a senior and a three-year All-Southern Pacific Conference first team honoree...registered 320 tackles, including 34 sacks, and snared 10 interceptions as a prep...recruited by the likes of Miami (Fla.), UNLV and Fresno State out of high school...instead elected to attend El Camino CC to work on his academics where he earned a 3.5 GPA...chose Cal over offers from Arizona, Minnesota, Kansas and Pittsburgh...born Jan. 15, 1978 in Jalisco, Mexico.
