Lan Bale is in his second season with the Cal program after joining the Golden Bear staff in September of 2000. Bale, 32, a South African native, joined the Cal program after spending 11 years competing on the professional tour, most recently in Wimbledon 2000. He has played in over 20 Grand Slams events, his highest finish being the quarterfinals of Wimbledon in 1994. Bale won four doubles tournaments between 1994-96 and reached the doubles finals on five separate occasions. Bale's highest singles ranking was 170.
He has had his greatest success come in the doubles game and has been ranked as high as 27th. He has competed against such players as Goran Ivanisevic, Stefan Edberg, and Boris Becker.
Bale's parents, originally from South Africa, own a snake park and campground. His brother is a professional hunter in Tanzania.
He resides in Berkeley with his wife, Jodi, originally from New Zealand. They met while on safari in Africa. Jodi worked as a safari guide for three years before meeting Bale.
