Hughes is an athletic big man who runs the floor well and has good shot-blocking and rebounding skills … younger brother of Cal senior center Solomon Hughes … saw limited action as a freshman, but should gain additional floor time with continued development.

As a Freshman in 2000-01: Played in 19 games for the Bears … had his most productive outing vs. Albany Dec. 11 with two points, two blocks and four rebounds in 10 minutes of action … also played six minutes at Saint Louis and five minutes vs. Yale … saw his playing time increase significantly vs. Washington and Washington State Feb. 22-24 when Nick Vander Laan was out with a sprained ankle … had two points and a rebound in nine minutes against UW and two points, two rebounds and a block vs. WSU.

High School: Hughes was rated the No. 8 center prospect in the country by Recruiter Online and the No. 11 center by USA Today … attended a year of post-graduate school at the New Hampton School in New Hampshire following graduation from Bishop Montgomery HS in 1999 … averaged 14 ppg, 7 rpg and 3 bpg at New Hampton and was voted honorable mention All-New England for the Class A Prep League … at Bishop Montgomery, averaged 13 ppg, 10 rpg and 6 bpg as a senior … earned second team All-CIF honors and named the team's Most Improved Player while leading the squad to a 26-8 record … selected team MVP as a junior.
