As a Freshman in 1998-99: Hughes shot 52.4 percent from the floor while averaging 3.3 ppg and 2.4 rpg ... ranked second on the Bears with 25 blocks ... had at least two blocks in a game six different times ... scored 10 points on three occasions, first in a win at BYU Dec. 19 ... also set a season best with six boards in the BYU contest ... came back with 10 points in his next game against Eastern Kentucky ... in Pac-10 play, totaled 10 points at Washington in February ... started two games on the season, at USC (5 points, 4 rebounds) and at Arizona (2 points, 4 rebounds) ... played well in Cal's victory over DePaul in the NIT with four points and five rebounds ... also scored 6 points (3-3 FG) in the NIT win over Colorado State ... missed the first three games of the season while waiting on the results of an eligibility appeal with the NCAA ... originally signed a National Letter of Intent with Tulane in the fall of 1996, but never enrolled there, going to Fork Union Military Academy in Virginia for a year instead ... appealed to be released from the letter so he could play at Cal, and his request was granted Dec. 3, 1998 ... made his Cal debut that night against Houston (2 minutes, 1 block), and playing time dramatically increased as the season progressed.
High School: Averaged 19 points, 12 rebounds and three blocks as a senior at Bishop Montgomery HS in 1996-97 ... received the team's Coaches' Award and served as captain ... best performance came against St. Bernard's HS when he nearly had a triple-double with 24 points, 12 rebounds and eight blocks ... also earned all-league honors in volleyball as a senior ... graduated from Bishop Montgomery in 1997 before doing a year of post-graduate work at Fork Union Military Academy in Virginia in 1997-98.
