Serela Kay, a standout collegiate women's water polo player and since 2004 the assistant coach for USA Water Polo's Youth National Team, is in her fourth season as the Cal assistant coach.

In addition to her duties on the pool deck, Kay has taken a large role in recruiting for the Bears. Kay not only travels to visit future Golden Bears but she also does extensive research for Cal to find potential recruits. Kay was also the catalyst behind the creation of the Cal Water Polo Camp for Girls. Additionally, Kay has aided the team in their unprecedented strength and conditioning by leading spin classes and spending time in the weight room with the student-athletes. Kay recently earned her masters degree at Berkeley in education, and Corso notes that her studies have benefited the team.

Kay, 30, came to Berkeley with 17 years of water polo experience, both as a player and a coach. With the USWP Youth National Team, she is responsible for implementing the selection process that whittles 150 athletes down to a 13-member team.

Prior to working at Cal, Kay was the director and senior head coach of the Santa Barbara Water Polo Foundation from 2004 to 2005. She was an assistant men's and women's water polo coach at Princeton from 2002-04, and named USA Water Polo Women's Elite Northeast Zone Coach of the Year in 2003.

As an athlete, Kay was a four-year starter and team captain as a senior, leading UCLA to national titles in 1997, 1998 and 2000. She was a member of the USA Junior National Team from 1995-97 as well, helping Team USA to a gold medal at the 1996 Junior Pan American Games in Havana, Cuba.

Kay graduated from UCLA in 2000 with a degree in psychology, with a specialization in business and administration. She received a Master of Sport Science in Sport Management degree from the United States Sports Academy in 2004, and a Master of Arts in Education degree from Berkeley in 2008.
