The Bears' No. 1 right-handed starter who is considered one of the best pitchers in the nation...is a preseason All-American in Baseball America, Rivals.com and Collegiate Baseball; and is again on the watch list for the Wallace Award as the top collegiate player...his 120 strikeouts last season were second on the Cal all-time single-season strikeout list...his 205 career strikeouts are ninth on the Bears' all-time list and only 79 away from the school record...has a 2.79 career ERA in 200.1 innings...is coming off an outstanding 2007 summer season with the USA National Team, finishing 4-1 with a 0.82 ERA, and striking out 39 batters with only seven walks in 43.2 innings...picked up two victories against The Netherlands, a 5-1 victory over the Dominican Republic July 15 at the PanAm Games in Rio de Janiero, Brazil, and a 7-2 victory over Japan July 4 in Durham, N.C....throws in the upper 80s to low 90s with an outstanding curveball and change-up...has impressive command of his pitches.

AS A SOPHOMORE (2007): Was first-team All-Pac-10 and the Rawlings Gold Glove winner for collegiate pitchers...finished 6-6 on the year, but was second in the Pac-10 with a 2.49 ERA and third in the league with 120 strikeouts in 115.2 innings (8th in the Pac-10)...threw at least 6.0 innings in 15 of his 17 starts, and 7.0 innings or more 11 times, including a complete game at Stanford Mar. 2...defensively, did not make an error in 40 chances with 17 putouts and 23 assists, and picked off two baserunners...on May 1 was named a semifinalist for the Golden Spike Award as the nation's top collegiate baseball player, and on Mar. 26 was picked as the National Player of the Week by Collegiate Baseball after striking out 16 batters (three away from the school record of 19 set by Larry Colton in 1963) with only one walk in 7.0 innings against Oral Roberts...opponents batted .241 (6th in the Pac-10) against him...won versus Arizona State 27 (8.0 innings, seven hits, two runs, two walks, nine strikeouts)...threw shut out versus Stanford Apr. 20 (7.2 innings, five hits, no runs, three walks, six strikeouts)...lost 1-0 at Oregon State Apr. 13 (6.0 innings, six hits, one run, four walks, eight strikeouts)...got no decision at Arizona Apr. 5 (8.0 innings, four hits, no runs, four walks, five strikeouts)...won versus Washington State Mar. 30 (7.0 innings, eight hits, four runs, one walk, six strikeouts)...won versus Kent State Mar. 9 (8.0 innings, three hits, no runs, no walks, 10 strikeouts)...lost 1-0 complete game at Stanford Mar. 2 (five hits, one run, one walk, eight strikeouts)...won versus Portland Feb. 11 (6.0 innings, one hit, no runs, three walks, four strikeouts).

AS A FRESHMAN (2006): Was 6-4 with 3.19 ERA (6th in the Pac-10), and had 85 strikeouts (10th in the Pac-10) in 84.2 innings, earning honorable mention All-Pac-10 accolades...won at Stanford May 6 (7.1 innings, six hits, one earned run, three walks, eight strikeouts)...defeated Washington Mar. 25 (8.0 innings, three hits, one earned run, five walks, seven strikeouts)...won versus Georgetown Mar. 7 (3.0 inn., 2 H, 0 ER, 2 SO)...defeated Long Beach State Feb. 12 with nine strikeouts in 6.0 innings (six hits, one earned run, four walks)...was named the team's 2006 Freshman of the Year.

HIGH SCHOOL/PERSONAL: At Bishop O'Dowd High School was 12-1 with an 0.71 ERA and 130 strikeouts as a senior...was named the 2005 North Coast Section Player of the Year and West Coast Classic MVP...was also the Hayward Area Athletic League Pitcher of the Year in 2004 and 2005, and a three-time first-team all-league selection...in 2004, hit .366 with 10 doubles and seven home runs, and on the mound was 9-2 with a 1.53 ERA, six complete games and 100 strikeouts...batted .313 in 2003 with a 2-1 record a 1.38 ERA, and in 2002, hit .450 in 15 games...was a member of the USA Junior National Team in 2004 and 2005...threw for the United States Junior National Team against Cuba in the fall of 2005 in Villahermosa, Mexico, allowing only two hits with no runs in 5.0 innings in a pool play game...majoring in American studies...parents are Willie and Jean Ross...born April 22, 1987 in Berkeley, Calif.
