No. 5 Stanford Blanks Cal, 8-0

STANFORD, Calif. - Sophomore Brent Hoard (Los Gatos, CA/Bellarmine HS) threw a complete game four-hit shutout to lead fifth-ranked Stanford (32-13 overall, 16-7 in the Six Pac) to an 8-0 victory over visiting California (17-33, 3-23) on Saturday afternoon at Sunken Diamond.

The Cardinal win, coupled with USC's 11-2 win over UCLA on Saturday, gives Stanford a two-game lead in the Pac-10 Southern Division with seven remaining. Both teams return to action on Sunday at 1 p.m. with Stanford visiting Cal and UCLA hosting USC.

Hoard went the distance for the first time in his career, while walking four and striking out seven to improve to 8-3. The Golden Bears had just one runner reach third base (second inning), and had just two baserunners after the fourth.

Stanford led 1-0 after four innings, but pulled away with two runs in the fifth and three in the sixth against Cal starter Jon Shirley (2-7; Bakersfield, CA/Stockdale HS).

Seniors Luke Quaccia (Oakdale, CA/Modesto JC) and Chris Clark (Cohoes, NY/Albany Academy) each hit solo homers in the fifth, while the Cardinal scored three runs on one hit and two Golden Bear errors in the sixth. Two of the three runs scored when Quaccia reached on an error by second baseman Ivan Lewis (Berkeley, CA/St. Mary's HS), and the third came across on sophomore Josh Hochgesang's (Fullerton, CA/Sunny Hills HS) fielders choice. Quaccia finished the day 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI.

Freshman Juan Hernandez (Tracy, CA/Tracy HS) doubled to lead the Golden Bears.
