Cal Defeats Pepperdine, 4-1

BERKELEY, Calif. -- The University of California baseball team defeated visiting Pepperdine, 4-1, Sunday at Evans Diamond in Berkeley, CA. The Bears improve to 4-4 overall, while the Waves fall to 2-5 on the season.

Cal was able to rebound from losing the first two games of the series against Pepperdine by defeating the Waves, 4-1, in the final game Sunday. The Bears had fallen 5-1 on Friday and 3-0 Saturday.

Cal was led by the pitching of sophomore reliever Tyler Walker (1-0), who came in in the fifth inning and went 5.0 innings with only one hit, no runs, no walks and had three strikeouts. Walker had replaced freshman starter Jon Shirley (4.0 innings, one run, one walk, two strikeouts), after Shirley had given up a lead-off double to Tyler Ferrer in the fifth inning. Ferrer later scored on an RBI ground out by Chris Cosbey, but Walker dominated the game from that point on, yielding only one hit for Pepperdine the next four innings. It was Walker's longest outing of his career.

Top hitters for Cal included sophomore shortstop Brian Oliver, who was 2-for-3 with a double, and freshman right fielder Juan Hernandez, who was 2-for-4 with a double. Junior left fielder Aaron Goednier also had a key bases loaded, two-run single in the fifth inning.

The losing pitcher for Pepperdine was reliever James Melcher (0-1), who came in in the fourth inning (0.7 innings, one hit, two runs, two walks, one strikeout).

The Bears next contest will be Tuesday, Feb. 11 at 2 p.m. at Saint Mary's
