The Cardinal Rallies in the Ninth to Top Cal, 6-5

STANFORD, Calif. - Sophomre Jody Gerut's (Villa Park, IL/Willowbrook HS) RBI double off the right field wall with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning gave sixth-ranked Stanford (19-7 overall, 6-1 in the Six-Pac) a 6-5 come-from-behind win over California (13-18, 1-9) on Saturday afternoon at Sunken Diamond.

The Golden Bears led 5-0 after four-and-a-half innings behind a three run homer in the third by Brian Oliver and a solo shot in the second by Aaron Gordnier. But Stanford climbed to within one on a two-run homer by Jay Pecci in the fifth and single runs in the seventh and eighth. The Golden Bears led 5-4 going into the bottom of the ninth with closer Tyler Walker on the mound.

With two outs and Pecci on first, freshman Ednund Muth hit a fly ball to left that was misread by Cal's Preston Sharp and fell in for a double that tied the game. Gerut followed with a line drive off the right field fence that scored Muth with the game winner.

Sophomore Josh Hochgesang went 3-for-4 for the Cardinal. while Pecci scored twice and drove in two. Tony Cogan worked a scoreless ninth to improve to 5-1.

Oliver led Cal with four RBI, while Walker picked up the loss to fall to 3-2.

The teams continue their thrre-game series on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Cal's Evans Diamond.
