Cal Baseball Loses to Arizona State, 13-9
BERKELEY, Calif. - The University of California baseball team fell to visiting Pacific 10 Conference foe Arizona State 13-9 Friday at Evans Diamond. Cal goes to 11-16 overall and 0-7 in conference while Arizona State improves to 18-10 and 4-6 in conference play.
Both Cal and Arizona State pounded out 13 hits, but sloppy fielding by the Bears proved costly as Cal had seven errors in the 13-9 loss. The Sun Devils had jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on RBI singles by Andrew Beinbrink and Kevin Tillman, but the Bears scored a run in the second inning on a leadoff home run by Aaron Gordnier to make the score 2-1.
Then, in the fourth inning, Cal's fielding fell apart as Arizona State scored six runs with the help of five Bears errors. The Sun Devils scored two more runs in the fifth inning on a two-run home run by Beinbrink and scored a run in the sixth on an RBI single by Mike Collins.
After trailing 8-1 going into the fourth inning, Cal scored two runs in the fourth on a solo home run by Preston Sharp and a successful double steal scored John Furstenthal. The Bears battled back in the game by scoring five runs in the sixth inning with the big hit being a three-run home run by Jason Hill to make the score 11-8.
Cal was able to get within 11-9 in the eighth inning with a lead-off home run by Hill, his second of the day. That was as close as the Bears would get as Arizona State scored two insurance runs in the top of the ninth on a two-run single by Beinbrink.
The winning pitcher for the Sun Devils was junior starter Ben Byrd, who improved his record to 4-1 by pitching 5 1/3 innings with eight hits, five runs, no walks and two strikeouts. Beinbrink was Arizona State's leading hitter, going 4-for-5 with a double, a home run and five RBI. Dan McKinley was another top hitter for the Sun Devils, going 3-for-6 with a double and an RBI.
The losing pitcher for Cal was starter Jon Shirley (2-2) who went 3 1/3 innings with seven hits, seven runs - three earned - two walks and two strikeouts. For the Bears, Hill was 3-for-4 with two home runs and four RBI, Gordnier was 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBI, and Sharp was 2-for-4 with a home run.
Cal will next host No. 14 Arizona State for the second game of a three-game series at Evans Diamond, beginning Saturday, March 15, at 1 p.m.
