Cal Baseball Loses In Extra-Innings by One Run

Berkeley, Calif. - The University of California baseball game between the Golden Bears and Arizona Wildcats was called due to darkness after 12 complete innings and the score tied, 6-6, Friday at Evans Diamond in Berkeley, Calif. The continuation of Friday's game will begin at 12 p.m. Saturday, followed by the regularly sceduled 1 p.m. game.

In the 15-inning game, Arizona scored two runs in the top of the 15th on RBI singles by Diego Rico and Jeff Gjerde off of Bear pitcher Brad Steele (2-1). Cal was able to muster one run in the bottom of the 15th on a two-out single by David Yengoyan.

The Bears rallied from a 6-2 deficit going into the eighth inning and were able to get within 6-5 on an RBI single by pinch-hitter David Yengoyan off of Arizona starter Darrell Hussman with two outs in the eighth. Cal tied the game in the bottom of the ninth when freshman Kevin Johnson had a two-out single off of Wildcat reliever Ryan Muskau, scoring his twin brother Curtis Johnson.

Arizona recieved a strong pitching performance from Hussman, who went 8.0 innings with seven hits, three earned runs, three walks and seven strikeouts. The Bears Tyler Walker came in in the 10th inning and twice had the bases loaded with one out (10th and 11th inning) and was able to get out of the jam.

Top hitters for the Wildcats so far in the game are Erik Mattern, Jeff Gjerde and Jason Hendricks, with three hits apiece. Preston Sharp so far has three hits for Cal.
