Cal Loses Second Extra-Inning, One Run Game to Arizona
TUSCON, Ariz. - In the Second Game of a two game series with Arizona Coreley knocked in the game-winning RBI single off Bear reliever Jim Vorhis (0-2), scoring Mattern, who had led-off the 10 th inning with a single.
Game two was an outstanding pitching dual between starters James Johnson for Arizona and Jon Shirley for Cal. Both pitchers went career-high 7.3 innings. Johnson gave up five hits, with one run, three walks and six strikeouts. Shirely yielded three hits,including no hits between the second and seventh inning, with four walks and three strikeouts.
Top hitter for Arizona was Mattern, who was 3-for-5 and has eight hits (8-for-13) in the series. Brian Oliver and John Furstenthal had two hits a piece for the Bears.
Cal will play the third game of a three-game series verus Arizona, beginning Sunday, Mar. 2 at 1 p.m. at Evans Diamond.
