Cal Baseball Falls to No. 4 Ranked UCLA, 7-6

BERKELEY, Calif. - The University of California baseball team fell to No. 4 ranked UCLA, 7-6, Saturday at Evans Diamond. Cal goes to 17-37 overall and 3-26 in Pac-10 Southern Division play, while UCLA improves to 38-14-1 overall and 17-9 in league.

The Bears gave the No. 4 ranked Bruins their second one-run game in the last two days before falling 7-6. UCLA had defeated Cal, 6-5, on Friday. The Bears have now lost 10 games in a row and eight conference games in a row.

Pinch runner Ryan Roques scored on a wild pitch by Bear reliever Jon Cuccias in the eighth inning to break a 6-6 tie and give UCLA the 7-6 win. Cal had a chance to win the game in the bottom of the ninth with the bases loaded and one out, but Bruin reliever Jake Meyer was able to strikeout Preston Sharp and pinch hitter David Yengoyan to earn his seventh save of the season.

The winning pitcher for UCLA was reliever Dan Keller (3-3), who replaced starter Peter Zamora in the seventh inning and pitched 2.0 innings with two hits, no runs, one walk and two strikeouts.

The losing pitcher for Cal was Jim Vorhis (3-5), who relieved starter Brad Steele and went 5.3 innings with four hits, two earned runs, two walks and three strikeouts.

The Bears had jumped out to a 2-0 lead after a solo home run by John Furstenthal in the first inning and a solo home run by Juan Hernandez in the second inning. The Bruins came back and took the lead a 4-2 lead in the third inning on two-run homers by Jon Heinrichs and Troy Glaus off of Steele. UCLA scored two more runs in the fourth inning on a two-run homer by Eric Valent off of Vorhis.

Cal was able to come back and tie the game, 6-6, with four runs in the sixth inning. Jason Hill and Hernandez had sacrifice flys and Ivan Lewis hit a two-run homer off of Zamora.

Top hitters for the Bruins were Heinrichs, Glaus and Valent with two RBI apiece. The Bears were led at the plate by Brian Oliver, who was 4-for-5.

Cal will play the third game of the three-game series Sunday, May 4 at 1 p.m. at Evans Diamond.
